Everett Foxx: Empowering Communities Through Financial Wisdom

Everett Foxx is a busy man. Which means, I only had a brief

moment to catch up with him at his Hanover office just before he went into a meeting with one of the many families he serves in Central Virginia.

Foxx is the principal of Oasis Insurance and Retirement Services, an company whose name was actually an idea of his son. Foxx shares,

“I asked my son, ‘why that name,’ and he said ‘Dad, I’ve seen you in each job you’ve had. You bring people out of bad situations in their life. You lead people out of a dry place, which made me think of the name Oasis.”

Foxx thought the name was catchy and appreciated the sentiment from his son. “You just don't know how [your children] view you until they tell you how they view you,” said Foxx. “So I embraced the name and here we are today, Oasis Insurance and Retirement Services.”

Oasis was founded in 2016. But its roots were planted in 2011 during a conversation with his financial advisor when Foxx shared that he was ready for a career change. At the time, Foxx was a VP for a marketing and business development company. However, his advisor thought financial services would suit him better. Recalling the pivotal conversation, Foxx explains “I really didn’t know if I could do what he had been doing for me and my family for the past 13 years. But my advisor said, ‘Sure, you can. You have the skill set that you've developed in your other careers and those skills will actually transfer into the insurance industry.’”

A year later, in 2012, Foxx started his career with New York Life as an agent. And in 2016, to set himself apart from the rest of the competition, Foxx set up a DBA as Oasis Insurance and Retirement Services. And it’s all been up hill every since.

The foundation of Foxx’s success can be traced back to his childhood days, growing up in a modest Caroline County community. Prosperity and affluence escaped his family. Seeing a financial and insurance professional come into his community was a rarity. Conversations about money and investments were rarely discussed.

During his Freshman Year at Ferrum College, Foxx’s father passed away. “We didn't have the appropriate amount of life insurance to continue as normal as could be with the family,” says Foxx. “We didn't have the income replacement in place. That taught me firsthand the lesson of life insurance, how it could impact a family, and how it could impact others.”

Now, Foxx takes that personal lesson and applies it to his business, helping to change the trajectory of a family and to make sure financial security will be there for all of his clients. But the road from college to Oasis wasn’t a straight path. He definitely had some amazing twists and turns along the way.

While attending Ferrum College, Foxx became an All-American basketball player and was inducted into the Sports Hall of Fame. He currently still holds the school's all-time leading scoring record. After college, he played professionally in Australia, France, Hong Kong, Japan, and Taiwan. Everywhere he went, he naturally built relationships with people that he still holds dear today.

It was these relationships that helped him make a successful transition into financial services. In the first three to four years Foxx mainly serviced blue and white collar workers. But as Foxx’s business expanded, his client based has also evolved. Using his athletic background, he was able to service a coveted base of professional athletes and entertainers and many business owners

“Being an entrepreneur and a business owner for over 20 plus years, I'm doing a lot of work with business owners from all arenas and all sizes,” says Foxx.

But Foxx isn’t just about the money. He also wants to educate his community and those around him. As we finished up our interview, Foxx wanted to make the point that despite the advances that African Americans have made in careers and income, there's still such a wealth gap with the rest of society.

Everett stressed the point, “Continuing education in addressing the wealth gap is needed. I am determine to make a difference by sharing this message and helping individuals and organizations achieve their financial and retirement goals, leaving a healthy financial legacy for his clients.

Everett fuels his passion with teaching people each day about financial literacy. He also does a lot of work in the Black Community with more than 90% of his client base identify as being African American community. He shares with them the importance of saving for retirement and smart investing. - M.M.G
