THE ESTATE AT RIVER RUN

In 2016, a wedding planner of 17 years, Kim Moody, and husband Andrew decided to tour a prospective property with no intention of actually purchasing a wedding and event venue until perhaps five years down the road. Moody, who had strict criteria already in mind for exactly what type of property she would be interested in, was not quite prepared for the feeling that came over her as she crossed the threshold of the front doors and stepped inside.

Describing it as “very emotional to the point of tears” she knew that this was no ordinary luxurious residence and after having seen this incredible estate in person, I must admit I wholeheartedly agree.

With nods to the Van Trap residence in Salzburg, Austria, the Palace in Versailles, France, and of course our own Biltmore Estate in North Carolina, The Estate at River Run literally had me gasping in awe from minute one.

As soon as I pulled up the driveway of this magnificent property, I could immediately tell that this was not just any ordinary “former residence turned event venue”. This, in fact, was something out of a dream.

The Estate at River Run originally was constructed in the 1980s for the coal baron, William Blair Massey with the intended purpose of being used to host parties and for entertaining.

The entire project in fact took about 7 years with design work for the interiors lasting alone about 5 years.

Located in Goochland County, the vast 62-acre property is situated on a high bluff overlooking the James River. The vast estate is surrounded by serene woods and includes beautiful grounds and spectacular views. The mansion itself is a 22,000 square foot brick Georgian Revival with a surrounding limestone balustrade and includes a double curved staircase and lower-level terrace.

The opulent interior includes marble floors, gilded 18-foot columns, custom crystal chandeliers, and even custom Wedgewood-themed embellishments which adorn the immense ceilings.

The various types of events The Estate can offer are really endless. Boasting several opulent ballrooms, multiple stunning ceremony locations, lodging for some overnight rentals, vast patios, and even an incredible circular pool with bluestone terraces and adjacent Jeffersonian-designed pool house.

The Moody’s eventually purchased the estate in 2018 and as soon as they closed on the property, they began with their official first tour only two days later. With Kim’s experience in wedding planning, her background in construction and design management, along Andrew’s property management expertise and bookkeeping experience, the couple perfectly balanced out the unique skillset needed to begin transforming this into a commercial property. Clients were booking almost immediately, and they jumped into the new venture right away.

Fast forward to today where there are ongoing exciting projects all around the property, including the current transformation of the Grand Tuscan Ballroom, complete with a wine cellar.

With all of these wonderful options, The Estate at River Run definitely offers the most incredible setting for any event that one can imagine, in the state of Virginia and perhaps in the country.

Wondering what Moody’s criteria were on her original list for the perfect event venue?

A grand private estate. Check.

An “Old World “feel. Check.

Incredible river views. Check.

Magical sunsets. Check.

I personally would like to add one more to that list. “Something dreams are made of”. Check.
